'The American Dream' is a metaphor used to convey images of, prosperity, opportunity,
rebirth, multitude, excess, longevity et cetera. It is an idea that indicates the
'dreamer' has capitalized on all of life's events whether good or bad and incorporated
both into becoming a better person. It’s much like the saying 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade' (which ironically in itself is also metaphor.) The notion of one living the American dream reinforces the idea that the nation is one of excess in the arenas of wealth, opportunity to name a few. The notion that all can achieve once inspired to do so. However it ignores socio-economic backgrounds, and those who 'fall short' of the American dream are somewhat ostracized.
